How to Make Grilled Dessert Pizza, Three Ways

Give your dessert pizza a summery upgrade by making it on the grill. Follow our step-by-step guide (including three different topping suggestions!), or create your own using whatever you have on hand.

Grill, Meet Pizza

Once you learn how to make grilled pizza dough, your options are endless. We'll take you through each step below so you can master the technique and make your own unique dessert.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

For the dough, you'll need warm water, honey, active dry yeast, all-purpose flour, salt and olive oil.

Step 2: Proof the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine the warm water, honey and yeast. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes. It should be foamy.

Step 3: Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, olive oil and the yeast mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough begins to come together.

Step 4: Knead the Dough

Transfer it to a lightly-floured work surface and knead it by hand until a soft smooth dough forms, about five to eight minutes. Form the dough into a ball and place it inside a lightly-greased large bowl. Cover the bowl loosely with plastic wrap and a damp kitchen towel and allow to rest in a warm place until it has doubled in size, for two hours.

Step 5: Form Dough Balls

Once the dough has doubled in size, gently punch it down and transfer it to a lightly-floured work surface. Cut it into three even pieces and form them into balls. Keep them covered with a kitchen towel.

At this point, you can use all of the dough and make three pizzas, or just make one and keep the other two dough balls in the fridge or freezer for later.

Step 6: Roll It Out

Working with one at a time, roll each dough ball out into a rectangle or a circle. Brush the surface evenly with olive oil.

Step 7: Grill It!

Preheat a large stovetop grill pan or an outdoor grill over medium heat. Once it is hot, carefully place the pizza dough onto the grill, oil side down. Then, brush the top side with oil as well. Cook until the dough begins to puff up slightly and grill marks form, about five to eight minutes.

Step 8: Flip It

Carefully flip over the dough and continue to grill it for about three to five minutes, until each side looks like the photo above. Transfer it to a baking sheet and continue grilling the rest of the pizza dough (if you are making multiple pizzas).

At this point, you can add any toppings you'd like! Read on for the peanut butter s'mores version, plus two more expert ideas.

Step 9: Add the Toppings

Spread the grilled pizza dough with peanut butter and then top with chocolate chips and marshmallows.

Step 10: Back On the Grill

Return the pizza to the grill and cook over low heat with the lid on until the chocolate has melted slightly and the marshmallows have browned somewhat. Keep an eye on it at this stage so that it doesn't burn.

If you are using a stovetop grill pan, you can do this stage in a preheated 350°F oven for 5 minutes.

Step 11: Slice & Serve

Transfer the pizza to a serving platter or large wooden cutting board and then top it with the crumbled graham crackers. Slice it however you'd like and serve warm.
